Grays history and heritage

Fantastic to see some proud retail history and heritage being shared today in Grays shop window. Although their display and new shop signage looks great, we would love to see this block come forward in the near future for works to further enhance these historic properties.

While many fantastic features still remain, originally the full terrace would have been in brick with sandstone dressing, each property having a traditional double bay frontage.

Luckily, the shop fronts retain much of their historic detailing such as the panelled pilasters and stone risers, but many of the original sash windows have been replaced with PVC and brickwork has been rendered.

Unfortunately, this is not a picture of the Northgate property, but we’d love to see one.

The Northgate terrace is just visible here, showing the exposed brickwork.

Interestingly, the Ribblesdale Hotel also appears to have scaffolding up – a view we are hoping to see again soon as renovation works begin as part of he Townscape Heritage Project.
