Uncovering hidden history

blakey moor tilesAs the project progresses we are uncovering more and more about the hidden histories of some of the buildings in our project area and there is nothing more exciting than getting into an old building and finding a glimpse of what lies beneath.

blakey moor tileThis week we’ve been lucky enough to get into a few buildings we haven’t been in for years. There has been a lot of dust and dirt, cobwebs, damp and dark corridors but each building has shown us something magical. Under the layers of neglect, paint and really bad wall paper we saw evidence of beautiful tiles, original woodwork and glass, intricate plaster and carved stone. Many of the skills used to create these features have long gone but we are so excited about the prospect of being able to conserve and restore what’s left and bring these beautiful buildings back to life.
