Regeneration of the Blakey Moor area takes another major step forward as the planning application for the Reel Cinema development was submitted yesterday.
The new eight-screen cinema to be built on the former Waves Water Fun Centre site will bring an exciting mix of Hollywood, Bollywood and independent film to Blackburn. It will also include a 100 space underground car park and food and drink outlets that spill out onto a pavement seating area on Nab Lane.
We are working closely with the landscape designers to ensure that the external improvements here blend seamlessly with our own plans for public realm improvements to Blakey Moor.
Owned and developed by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, the new cinema will be leased to Reel, a major independent operator owned by Kailash Chander ‘KC’ Suri.
In the Lancashire Telegraph today, KC said,
“Coming to Blackburn is about creating something unique. I could see the potential as soon as I visited Blackburn.”
Cllr Phil Riley, the Council’s executive member for regeneration, said:
“This new cinema development will draw residents into the town centre and will play a part in improving the town centre economy in Blackburn.
“This has been a huge priority for the Council and I’m delighted that over the past year it has gone from strength to strength, including improvements in the night-time economy.”
As part of the Townscape Heritage Project and wider regeneration plans for the area, Reel Cinema also stepped in and acquire the form Jubilee Pub from Thwaites, helping us to secure it’s future use for food and drink.
Rebranded as The Lemon Tree, the pub reopened before Christmas.
